The Magic of Modern Day Reflexology
Did you know that the bottom of your feet could actually affect what’s going on in other areas of your body?
This is the foundation of Zone Therapy, also known as modern day reflexology.
Zone Therapy is an alternative medicine involving the application of pressure to the feet using your thumb, finger, or specific hand techniques. On each foot, there are over 7,000 nerve endings called reflexes that correspond to every organ and system within your body. By pressing on these reflex points or ‘zones’ of the body, you stimulate the nervous system and open energy pathways that may be blocked or congested. The origins of this system date back to ancient times, and you can learn a little bit more about its history here.
HOW DOES IT WORK
Zone therapy may sound a little complicated, but it’s actually quite simple. Anyone can do it, and even better, your Bed of Nails can help.
Imagine dividing your body into ten longitudinal zones. Each one of your toes defines a specific zone, which means you have five zones per foot, for a total of ten zones. Within each zone is a network of connected organs, muscles, nerves, glands and blood supply (practically the entire body). In order for each zone to work in harmony and function at the optimum level for good health, the energy must remain clear and flow freely. Any block of the body’s natural energy has the potential to negatively impact the entire network.
ZONE THERAPY IN ACTION
Many people suffer from chronic headaches due to neck tension. One way to relieve that tension is to increase the circulation of blood flow to your neck muscles. In Zone Therapy, you would start by targeting the big toes of the right and left foot, both of which are connected to the head and neck. From there, you would take one of two paths:
- To help prevent headaches, you would make small circles with your thumbs on your big toes and stimulate the nerve endings on a regular basis.
- If you already have a headache, you can wet a paper towel or cloth with very warm water, wring it out and snake it between your toes like you’re getting a pedicure. From there, make a see-saw motion to stimulate the nerves between the toes and activate the reflexes for your head and neck. Stimulate the big toe for 30 seconds 2 to 3 times a day.
HOW CAN MY BED OF NAILS HELP?
The feeling of standing on your Bed of Nails with tired feet is an incredible feeling! Whether you stand directly on your Bed of Nails or rest your feet against it, doing so will help to stimulate those 7,000 nerve endings on the bottom of your feet, freeing up trapped energy, increasing blood flow, and filling your whole body with energy. Bed of Nails will provide similar benefits as Zone Therapy, but the main difference is that is cannot target specific issues or reflexology points. This post will help you to get started.
F.A.Q.
Is there a greater benefit to the rounded shape for feet, versus a flat mat?
The round shape helps the nails make stronger contact with the curved areas of the body like the arches of your feet. Standing on the flat mat is also great for the feet though the arches may not feel the same level of treatment. Some people keep the BON Pillow under their desk as a foot rest and as you’re sitting you can determine how much pressure by how strong or lightly you rest your feet. It’s really great for any curved area of the body: the lower back, behind the knees and the neck. And blissful when used together with the BON Mat!
